If you’re new to writing haiku poems, here’s a how to write a haiku article. There you will learn that there are rules and guidelines around how many syllables in each line, but that there is also flexibility.
Whether there was an exact metric in origin, is not completely clear, and then there’s the transliteration between Japanese and English, which naturally alters the metrics.
What is clear is that haiku poetry always has just three lines.

WINTER THOUGHTS
Mid winter afternoon –
~Martha Grow, calligraphy artist, and poet
Blue tree-cast shadows
stretching over
the sparkling earth blanket.
Winter’s fresh white coat
dotted with tracks.
Settling down on
Autumn’s leafy debris
to await warmer day
that will nudge green shoots
from their slumber.
We are but echoes
of Nature’s rhythm,
in that there can be
great peace.
