Who is Rupi Kaur?
Rupi Kaur is an Indian-born Canadian poet, illustrator, and author. By just 28 years old, Rupi has risen to fame. Notice… we never say “waited for fame”, or “happened upon success”. It’s always verbs.
Rupi’s rise to fame came through her sharing her work on Instagram and Tumblr through short visual poetry. Now she is an international phenomenon.
Today, Rupi has over 759,000 following her on Facebook, and 4.3 million on Instagram as of this writing. Her poetry readings on YouTube have been viewed millions of times, even though she doesn’t even have her own YouTube channel.
She’s been on top interview shows and news channels, and it all began with consistent daily creation and sharing. Rupi’s fans began asking for her poetry book before she had one.
Turned down by multiple publishers, today, her art is her passion and her profession. Rupi Kaur self published and because of her freely sharing her poetry, through social media and poetry readings, she built a following who are eager to buy her work.
That’s why it is essential for creators to put our work out in the world. We cannot wait to be “discovered” in our studio, at our keyboard or local art class.
Rupi is now a successful poet, uplifting, compassionate and empowering for people in general and women in particular.
At age 62, I especially appreciate this one she wrote on aging. It’s written along the lines of my own reflections of my weathered sun kissed skin. This empathic ability is one of her gifts. At age 28, Rupi is able to empathetically express the thoughts and feelings of an age she hasn’t yet been, as if it were her own.
give me laugh lines and wrinkles
i want proof of the jokes we shared
engrave the lines into my face like
the roots of a tree that grow deeper
with each passing year
i want sunspots as souvenirs
for the beaches we laid on
i want to look like i was
never afraid to let the world
take me by hand
and show me what it’s made of
i want to leave this place knowing
i did something with my body
other than trying to
make it look perfect
