Today is the first day of the rest of the year. So begin by answering this: “My goal this year is to…”
Maybe it’s January 1st, or March 23rd, or… almost September. The day really doesn’t matter, the effort put forth each day does. And setting and following a plan.

Today is the First Day of the Rest of the Year
No matter where you are in your “year”, no matter whether you’re late in setting goals, plans got derailed, or you’re right on track, today is the first day of the rest of the year.
If you haven’t yet set your goals, start now. There’s no need to wait until the first of the new quarter, or second half, or for a Monday, or any other particular day. Today, right now, is the best time, if you haven’t yet started.
The key is to get started building your future without delay. If you don’t have a goals journal or planner, just start with a notepad or Google doc. or Word doc. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to make an elaborate plan. Set your goals in motion. You can tweak it as you go.
If you’re not sure where to start, no worries. For now let’s focus on your business goals as a creator. Write:
By the end of the year my goal is to _________….
Only you can answer this question for you, but here are some idea starters from our own experience and that of the iCreateDaily community:
My Goal this Year…
- By the end of the year, my goal is to increase my article posting from one per week to five per week.
- By the end of the year, my goal is to publish a new book.
- By the end of the year, my goal is to have started and grown a new podcast.
- By the end of the year, my goal is to be earning enough from my side-gig to leave my job.
- By the end of the year, I will have taken a completed a course on Facebook Advertising.
- By the end of the year, I will have participated in four art shows.
- By the end of the year, I will have created my website and populated it with one article per week.
- By the end of the year, I will become a paid editor.
- By the end of the year, I will have hired a VA who can handle my social media.
We would love to hear about your goal/s if you’d like to share. When we write them, say them and share them, they start to become more real. Then we work on them daily and they do become real.
Setting Goals
Each day is another opportunity to move closer to living that future. Goals are where you’re going, not how you will get there. Goals are not tasks. So when setting goals keeping that in mind will help you refine your thinking on what to identify as your goals versus the actions toward achieving them.
If you have the iCreateDaily 90 Day Goals Journal, on page 7 there is a simple intro page to the next 90 days of goal-setting. There is a statement to fill in:
I am eager to achieve my goals because:
This is a good place to post your one-year macro goal. To help you decide, you might reflect on the answer to this question:
In one year I want to __________________________________…
(be, have, achieve, accomplished, etc)
Not Clear?
Perhaps you’re very clear on what you want to accomplish over this next year. But if not and you want to clarify what you want to achieve over the next year, then start by making a list of the things that come to mind.
If you have the iCreateDaily Journal, see pg. 112 for exercises (or this article) to guide you in decision making and deciding on the 1-3 macro goals for this year. This process is culled from a process used by Warren Buffet blended with our own process and can be used for all kinds of goal setting and decision making.
With your year’s big goal identified, then, each 90-day goal will be designed to move you closer to your BIG GOAL. And each month, week and day’s goals will comprise the micro and macro steps to get you there.
You start big and cut that big pie into manageable pieces that are allocated to each quarter. Each quarter’s goal/s are then broken into monthly goals which are further broken into weekly and then daily goals and actions.
Setting goals and working on them daily, will see you into the future of your dreams.

Setting Goals is Like Planning a Trip
Setting a goal is like planning a trip. You start with where you want to go, (your one-year goal in this case). Then you begin to make plans on how to get there and all that you’ll need to do to make that happen. It’s the same with goals. Your goal is your destination. Your actions get you there.
Where are you with your goals for this year? For more on that, check out this article. If you need a 90 Day Goals Journal, you can see more about that here.
