Joy vs Happiness

While we were looking for joy quotes, we found that many of the quotes tend to interchange the words joy and happiness. Much like how with social media, we tend to use “Love” in the same way we would use “Like.”

Table of Contents

Merriam-Webster defines the word Joy as: “…the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.”  Dictionary.com also has an almost identical definition. Yet when you search the psychological definition of joy vs happiness they are distinctly different.

To help you hone in on joy vs happy, this article and many joy quotes should help.

Happy or Joyful?

So, what is the difference between joy and happiness?

Happiness is an emotion which comes and goes.  It can be caused by a mix of internal and external sources. If we’re experiencing loss, sadness, anger, or any other negative emotion, we don’t feel happy.

Joy, is a lasting state of being.

Much like gratitude, when we’re in a state of joy, we have a sense of peace regardless of what may be happening around us.

Sure, we still experience all emotions, positive and negative. It’s just that underlying it all, when crises subside, our natural reset is back to center…to a permeating state of joy.

The home of my heart has weathered the storm where joy is alive and well.

Joy is a lens through which we can view life as positive even when we experience negatives.

Joy is a state of being, that creates more joy.

Joy is a deep inner peace, from which warmth wells. Joy is like the depths of the ocean versus the surface. No matter what the weather may bring to the surface of the sea, the depths remain constant. That’s joy.

Joy and Love are inseparable twins… wherever one is, the other will be found.
