When Bad can be Good

If you’re feeling great right now, that’s awesome! If not so great at the moment, that’s okay too. It’s the dips and valleys, struggles and strife in the journey of life that lead to breakthroughs in self discovery.

The struggles inform us on the areas we need to strengthen and reveal to us a greater capacity to overcome. Growing through challenges makes us stronger and more capable and that success feeds greater growth. Just as negativity can implode upon itself if we immerse and wallow in that, positivity can expand upon itself and grow exponentially if we focus on that.

Never Lose Faith

It’s critical to remember that no storm lasts forever, and to realize that “this too shall pass”, even when it seems interminable. Faith and patience rule the day and reveal the way.

Never ever make important decisions from the depths of despair or the throes of negativity. Fear and anxiety, stress and tension close down the creative and cognitive areas of the brain and leave us feeling hopeless.

You must immerse in all the positive and uplifting things and people that you can during this time. You probably won’t feel like it. You’ll probably feel like retreating and hunkering down, under a blanket. But this is when you most need to do the opposite. If you push against what’s hard to do now, you will recover much more quickly.

Overcoming adversity will make you stronger.

Audio Article – Self Discovery a Personal Odyssey:

Emotional Fitness

When you’re feeling out of sorts and disconnected from anything of significance or importance in your life, that’s actually a good thing. Not good because we’re wishing you struggles or discomfort. Never! But if that is where you are, it can actually be good news.

But how is that good? How can it be good to feel bad?

Because you’re here working on it. You’re exploring self discovery and self awareness. This places you ahead of the majority who never really ask the questions that open the doors of discovery into the realms of Self.

Instead, learn how to reframe negatives to positives. It works. Do it regularly and it becomes a good habit for life.

Self discovery is like exercise for the emotions. The more we do it the easier it is and the fitter we get.

Bad is good when it pushes us to better.

Lives of Quiet Desperation Quote

Who wrote the ‘lives of quiet desperation’ quote? Likely you’ve read the oft-quoted (and misquoted) Thoreau quote:

What Henry David Thoreau said in his book, Walden:

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”
~Henry David Thoreau, philosopher, in Walden, 1817-1862

What Henry David Thoreau did NOT say, though often attributed to him:

“Most men lead lives of quiet desperation, and die with their song still inside them.”
~Thoreau misquoted by Alan Z. Feuer1)https://www.poynter.org/news/new-york-times-corrects-misquote-thoreaus-quiet-desperation-line

Sadly, this collective quote is too often true. One thing we cannot do as we look back on life at the end, is change it then.

It’s critically important is to recognize that we can change things now. We can live from our present into the future we envision by letting go the old stories that hold us back.

When it comes to self discovery, heed the discomfort. Pay attention to dis-ease. Probe the unease to see where it leads.

Heed those inner nudges. Your conscience is the mediator between psyche and soul.

Quiet Desperation is not a Bad Thing

When your car is low on gas, the ‘low fuel’ light goes on. That’s a good thing. If we hadn’t noticed our gauge was low before, then we need that reminder. When the alarm clock goes off, it’s a good thing because we needed to wake up.

So if you’re feeling out of sorts with self, perhaps it is just an alarm going off to get your attention. Something within you needs you take notice and make adjustments. Perhaps that internal ‘fuel light’ is a signal to feed your soul… to discover yourself and what lights you up so that you can do more of that.

Discomfort, unease and even depression are like the roadside rumble strips. That bumpity-bump is designed to get your attention to get back on track when you stray from the way to your destination… your destiny.

Your body signals your attention in various ways, such as pain, hunger, hot, cold, tired, etc. But how does your soul get your attention?

If you’re off track from more of what you’re really here to do… from working in your zone of genius, how will you know? The more you notice and address those inner nudges, the more you open the lines of communication between your soul and your psyche, and between your conscious and unconscious mind.

Quiet desperation is not a bad thing because all change begins with discomfort compelling you to grow.

Discomfort is a Wake-up Call

It’s refreshing to realize that discomfort is not a bad thing, and in fact, can be viewed with interest and intrigue. If you’ve read some of our other articles, you may have seen that we’re big on the power of reframing.

If a friend calls you up, you take that call with eager interest to hear what’s up with him. You can reframe discomfort, unease, unhappiness and even depression in the same way. It’s a call from a friend with a message for you. Heed it.

Pain is there to get our attention so that we may address the issue and heal it.

Unease is a call from a friend with a message for you. Listen.

Okay, so now that your attention has been flagged, your personal odyssey of self discovery can begin more consciously.

A Conversation with Yourself

If your friend phoned you to say that she needed to talk to help her work through something, you’d be there for her. Perhaps you’d drop everything and converse right then, or perhaps you’d schedule a coffee or dinner together. But you would not let it go. You’d be there for her.

Schedule a conversation with yourself. How often do we do that…? How often do we really sit down and listen and probe within ourselves in the same way we would with a friend who’s struggling and needing someone to advise her?

Be there for yourself, like you would a friend.

Self Discovery and Intuition

The more you listen to yourself… to the signals your mind, body and soul are sending to you, the more they will speak to you and the better will be your relationship with yourself. That’s true for any relationship, right? And the better your relationship with yourself, the better will be your relationship with anyone.

When you are friends with yourself, you are friends with the world.

Discover Yourself

The four things above all else you can do for developing self discovery, intuition and self awareness?

  1. ASK: Ask lots of questions of yourself and listen to every answer.
  2. LISTEN: Listen to the signals from your soul – those things that touch, inspire, and nudge you.
  3. INSPIRATION: Feed your aspirations by tuning into and doing those things that elevate and inspire you.
  4. ACT: Take action. Daily.

“It takes courage….to endure the sharp pains of self-discovery rather than choose to take the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.”
~Marianne Williamson, teacher, speaker, author, born-7/8/1952

Self Discovery

Self discovery begins by listening to your inner voice, observing and reflecting. As your own best friend get to know yourself inside and out. So often we get busy in the day-to-day life that we forget to really and truly connect with ourselves and probe beyond the routine thoughts and assumptions.

What Lights You Up?

Begin with a list of everything you can think of that you love to do. Don’t edit it… just live-stream from your consciousness to your paper or keyboard, whatever comes to mind.

You might want to screenshot and print this list, or copy and paste it into a document.

Remember Your Dreams…

  • What do you spend your free time doing?
  • Do you daydream now… as an adult?
  • What did you used to dream about when you were younger?
  • Did you play pretend when you were little, and if so, what did you pretend?
  • What kinds of things were you drawn to when you were a child?
  • What were your favorite subjects in school?
  • Reflect on what kind of people you’re drawn to and why?
  • Who in the world do you admire, and why?
  • When you are on your deathbed at the end of a long and fruitful life, what do you want to be sure you can say about your life?
  • What do you want other people to say about you / your life?

Add to this list any other questions that come to mind for you to include in this and future conversations with yourself. If you’re not already journaling, you might begin journaling the questions you ask and your answers.

Journaling helps to map out your journey of self discovery… you’re writing your story.

You can find lots more on developing your dreams and passions in other articles on this website. We hope you’ll visit and stay awhile.

Inspiration is the soul food and action is the muscle to nurture your aspirations and propel them into being.
